OUR STORY
Widgeon Waterfowl was born in the heart of Saskatchewan — but the real story starts in Awendaw, South Carolina, where Luke Ballam was raised among salt marshes, sunrises, and southern grit. While others partied, Luke was up at 1 a.m. chasing ducks, redfish, and dreams. Hunting didn’t just keep him grounded — it gave him direction, purpose, and a lifelong obsession with the outdoors.
After graduating from The Citadel in 2015, a chance road trip to North Dakota changed everything. One sunrise hunt later — just him, a buddy, and a field full of birds — and Luke knew he’d never look at waterfowl the same way again. A year later, he made it to Canada… and never looked back.
Why Saskatchewan?
There’s no place on Earth like it. The open skies. The dry barley and pea fields. The unrelenting migration. The look in Widgeon’s eyes the first time she saw birds stack in the sunrise — that’s when Luke knew: This is where we build something that lasts.
Today, Widgeon Waterfowl is built on that bond — hunter and dog, land and sky, passion and persistence. We don’t just run hunts. We craft experiences that you’ll tell your grandkids about.
Because this isn’t just a business.
It’s personal..
meet widgeon
She’s not just part of the story — she is the story.
Widgeon is a female yellow lab and She’s hunted from Alaska to Argentina, Greenland to Canada, with plans to finish the final five species that would mark her among the most traveled working dogs in the world. But accolades aside, Widgeon means one thing to Luke: everything.
“She’s my child. My business partner. My reason. I’ve busted my ass every day just to give her the life she deserves.”
When the field’s stacked with birds and the wind is cutting sideways, Widgeon doesn’t flinch. Whether it’s a 250-bird day or a single drake at sunset, she gives everything — and that fire is what powers this entire operation.
